Festival Stage was created in 2009 as a non-profit producing an Actors' Equity LORT-level theatre series with actors from national and regional markets in contemporary and new plays. The plays were chosen for their stories about people inventing a "new normal" at a time when the country was doing the same. Originally an affiliate company of N.C. Shakespeare Festival, Festival Stage introduced professional theatre to the arts mix in a six year project also designed to help establish Winston-Salem's newly renovated Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts.
