Steve Umberger has directed / produced / developed stage and film / video projects for many companies. Directing credits include The Road to Mecca, The Christians, Falsettos, Proof, 33 Variations, Alice in Concert, Six Degrees of Separation, Angels in America, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, all six productions (and counting) of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and new scripts including ones by Wendy Hammond, Beth Henley and Clyde Edgerton.

He has founded or co-developed four companies including directing / producing 100+ plays as Founder/Artistic Director of Charlotte Repertory Theatre, which became one of the 70+ national members of The League of Resident Theatres. The Rep team included a collective of resident and visiting artists, among them Tony Award, Academy Award, Emmy Award and Pulitzer Prize winning actors, writers and designers.

His work includes theatre and symphony collaborations; interdisciplinary projects; and the long-term development and premieres of many new works. Film/television includes An Appalachian Trilogy (co-writer, director), the documentary Call Me By My Name, and the Acting Our Age series. As Founder / Director of the production company The Works (aka Playworks), projects include a new format: stage and film documentaries created with 'citizens of history' whose life stories also tell how the past became the present. These projects grew through 40+ years of directing, producing and storytelling.

Member SDC and AEA. Studied at Circle in the Square NY, Univ. of NC/Charlotte (BCA Theatre) and with Alan Langdon and Larry Moss in NY.
