Steve Umberger has directed / produced / developed over 200 stage and film/video projects for many companies. Favorite directing credits include The Road to Mecca, Proof, 33 Variations, Husbandry, Alice in Concert, Falsettos, Kith and Kin, The Christians, Cabaret, Communicating Doors, Three Hotels, The Goat or Who is Sylvia?, Angels in America, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, and all six productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream. He has founded or co-developed four companies including directing / producing 100+ plays as Founder & Artistic Director of Charlotte Repertory Theatre, which became one of the 70+ national members of The League of Resident Theatres. The Rep team included a collective of resident and visiting artists including Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, Emmy Award and Academy Award honorees. Work includes theatre and symphony collaborations; interdisciplinary projects; and the long-term development and premieres of many new works in their world premieres including ones by Wendy Hammond, Beth Henley and Clyde Edgerton. Film / television includes An Appalachian Trilogy, the documentary Call Me By My Name, and the series Telling the Times.
As Founder / Director of the 35 year old production company The Works (Playworks Group), recent projects include the series Acting Our Age with a new format of stage-and-film documentaries, each created over the course of a year with groups of people whose life stories also tell our history.
